Post Nasal Drip is the condition whereby mucus drips down the back of your throat, and is an irritating and embarrassing condition that always seems to get the better of us.
Mucus is continuously draining down our throats daily; a process that we are completely unaware of.
In some cases Post Nasal Drip occurs when the sinus cavities are congested and the only way the mucus can drain is down the back of the throat.
Anyone, both young and old can experience this condition; however it is pregnant patients who feel more hampered by Post Nasal Drip due to fluctuating hormones.
There is also a tendency for pregnant women to develop Rhinitis (a runny nose). The condition is so common that it’s named Pregnancy Rhinitis. Rhinitis or a runny nose can occur due to allergies, the ordinary flu, fluctuations in body hormones or diet.
During pregnancy, one should always be aware of the unborn fetus, as certain treatments can be dangerous to its development. A qualified medical practitioner can advise you on the choice of medication as incorrect treatment can cause detrimental damage to both mom and babe.

                Post Nasal Drip and Pregnancy

Post Nasal Drip is a silent condition, just an awkward embarrassment that most live with daily. The only time others notice this condition is when one constantly clears their throat or has a bad breath as a result of Post Nasal Drip.
What some may be unaware of is that Post Nasal Drip is the main cause of acid reflux, and affects pregnant women mostly. The baby also has a part in the course of giving the new mom acid reflux as well as gas, as high levels of progesterone can slow the muscular contractions that help move food through the intestines resulting in stagnant food. This causes a build up of gases and pressure.
Protecting the unborn baby is the number one priority when pregnant; an expecting mom should therefore try to avoid taking any medication to relive the gas or acid reflux condition until you have consulted your GP or Doctor.
Another common condition that occurs during pregnancy is pregnancy rhinitis. This is where your nose continually has mucus flowing out of it and the individual has to have a box of tissues at hand, at all times. The cause of these symptoms could be allergies, fluctuating hormones during pregnancy or the normal flu. It could also on the other hand be a sign of the start of sinusitis. A saline nasal wash often helps to alleviate some of these symptoms, as it helps breaks down some of the mucus that is casing congestion and pressure. It also cleans your nasal passages removing any infected mucus. The saline wash is not only safe for your sinuses but also for your unborn babe.
The mucus which runs down the back of the throat can at times be green or yellow mucus indicating that that you may have an infection. When approaching a condition like this, the treatment has to be very delicate as the unborn child is the main priority at all times. With conventional medication, a lot of the medication is generalized, as opposed to individualized medication which is better suited when treating pregnant women.
Homeopathy provides a solutions to treating sinus conditions individually and ensures that the Pregnant Mother over comes the symptoms being experienced, while also treating the underlying causes and ensuring safety. There are no side effects and most if not all remedies boost or protect your immune system so you get full relief and treatment on all bases. This is the natural way, with the bonus of having no side effects as most homeopathic remedyies are safe to use when being pregnant.

                Acid Reflux

Ones diet also plays an important role in causing one to have gas and acid reflux during pregnancy. Acid reflux symptoms can affect the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES. Foods such as curry, fried potatoes, acidic fruits (lemons, oranges, cranberries, tomatoes) onions, sour cream, coffee, garlic, bacon, tea and greasy foods add to acid reflux and should be avoided. Substitute it for healthy, non greasy, non fatty foods such as apples, baked potatoes, green beans, peas, broccoli, carrots, fish and ginger.
Ginger is an excellent treatment for Post Nasal Drip, throat conditions and nausea. Try keeping a packet of ginger biscuits besides your bed as this should help with nausea upon waking (morning sickness).
Acid reflux is also known as GERD. In pregnant women, the pressure of the baby causes the stomach to be displaced into the diaphragm and also causes an interference with food particles. This allows gastric acid to rise up to the esophagus causing acid reflux. Increase pressure within the abdominal space caused by the growing fetus can also decrease the rate at which food travels down the esophagus.
Some of the normal pregnancy symptoms can be symptoms of GERD. If the individual case is serious, a qualified gastroenterologist should be seen as soon as symptoms are experienced to avoid complications with pregnancy or health. Gas is also common in women before their menstrual cycle as a result of fluctuating hormones.
Obesity can also play a role in causing gas and acid reflux.
Post Nasal Drip is one of the symptoms that cause’s acid reflux. Post Nasal Drip, once treated effectively should not put a damper on ones life, especially if the individual is pregnant. Post Nasal Drip, if left untreated, may lead to other serious conditions such as nausea, constipation and diarrhea.

Foods that cause Diarrhea Constipation & Nausea whist pregnant
Diarrhea can leave one feeling drained and withdrawn, and is always best to look at foods which promote stool formation when working out a diet.
In some cases foods described as the BRAT diet if often recommend as you get the desired nutrients and minerals from these foods. They consist of bananas, rice, apples/applesauce and toasted bread. Also a lot of fluids are recommend such as water and energizing drinks as diarrhea can result in one loosing a lot of needed Potassium from the body.
When choosing foods, pregnant women should also look for foods that do not contribute to constipation and nausea. Foods such as the above mentioned can cause constipation if consumed in the excess.
Too much fat and not enough fiber in ones diet can also contribute to constipation in pregnant women… add an excess of dairy and the chances of constipation increase ten fold.
Calcium can also be obtained from fresh orange juice (drink orange juice in moderation as this can lead to acid reflux) and cooked carrots. Raisins, ground wheat and prune juice are well known house hold remedies that help with constipation.
Nausea is easily over come with the use of cloves, chewing a piece of mint or ginger. With pregnant women almost anything eaten can cause symptoms of nausea, so the diet chosen should be carefully looked into or a nutritionist or dietician consulted. One important point to remember is too have fun whilst pregnant. Eat small portions regularly as opposed to large ones as this helps with acid reflux and always have a nutritious meal and bag of ginger biscuits tuck away for later.
