Symptoms of Sinus Pressure

Sinus Pressure is a symptom associated with various respiratory conditions. Pressure in the sinuses often results from an accumulation of fluids and a swelling of the blood vessels in the mucus membrane lining of the sinuses. There are several symptoms that are associated with Sinusitis and Sinus infections.

These include symptoms such as:

  • Sinus pressure
  • Fever
  • Post Nasal Drip
  • Fatigue
  • Congestion

If I don't have any of the above mentioned symptoms could I still have Sinus Pressure?

Pressure in the sinuses can cause a great deal of pain, discomfort and headaches for a sinus infection sufferer. A person suffering from sinus pressure can feel pain around the eyes, nose, or forehead and can even feel pain in the upper teeth.

What causes Sinus Pressure?

The sinus cavities have openings called ostium which open into the nasal passages allowing for free exchange of air and mucus. The mucous linings have ciliated epitheliums (cells with fine hairs) that move the mucus from the sinus cavities and drains into the nasal passages.

Air that is trapped in the sinuses together with other secretions may cause pressure on the sinus wall, this can result in intense pain or a sinus attack. When the membranes of the ostium become swollen, they prevent air from entering the paranasal sinuses. This in turn results in a vacuum being created within the paranasal cavity which causes pain.

The following things can cause the sinus membranes to swell which in turn will cause Sinus Pressure:

  • Colds/flu
  • Allergens
  • Viral infections
  • Bacterial infections

Pollen Pollen

Allergens that may affect the sinuses include:

  • Mold
  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Dust
  • Air pollution

If Sinus Pressure is not treated, it can predispose you to future bacterial infections of the sinuses.

Does Sinus Pressure make my Sinusitis sensitive to touch?

Yes, Sinus Pressure can make the frontal sinus area quite sensitive to touch. Pressure is one of the main causes of sinus pain and will eventually lead to a Sinus Infection, Sinusitis or a Sinus Headache.

How to relieve Sinus Pressure?

There are many ways to relieve Sinus Pressure:

  • Inhalers
  • Nasal sprays
  • Antibiotics to control a bacterial infection
  • Inhaling vaporizer steam to soothe inflamed sinus cavities

Most of the above mentioned ways to relieve Sinus Pressure only offer temporarily relief and once you stop using them, the Pressure return worse than before.
