Fungal Sinusitis

Fungus Fungus

Fungi are plant-like orgasms that lack chlorophyll, and therefore absorb food from dead organic matter.

A fungal infection occurs when the fungi start to feed on organisms that are still alive, even though they only suppose to feed of dead organisms. They thrive in moist, dark cavities, such as the sinus cavities

When the sinus cavities become inflamed due to inhaled fungi, Fungal Sinusitis occurs. They invade the body and a number of side effects occur. Fungi, like bacteria break down almost every type of complex organic substance and because they are organisms, they do not require light for food production.

Fungal sinusitis is a serious condition that is either invasive or noninvasive. There are four types of Fungal Sinusitis:

  • Noninvasive Fungal Sinusitis

    Mycetoma Fungal Sinusitis

Mycetoma Fungal Sinusitis produces fungal balls, which are clumps of spores that usually occur within the Maxillary Sinuses (located beneath the cheeks). It does not cause significant inflammatory response, but it does cause some sinus discomfort.

Allergic Fungal Sinusitis

Allergic Fungal Sinusitis is an allergic reaction to environmental fungi found in the air we breath in. It causes thick fungal debris, nasal congestion and the formation of sinus polyps. These polyps cause an obstruction in the nose and the ostium (opening to the sinuses) and produces chronic inflammation.

  • Invasive Fungal Sinusitis

    Chronic Indolent Sinusitis

Chronic Indolent Sinusitis occurs when an invasive form of Fungal Sinusitis invades a patient's body that does not have an immune deficiency. It can progress for months to years and eventually lead to chronic headaches and facial swelling that can cause a visual impairment. Depending on the patient's immune level, they may be a risk of Fulminant Invasive Disease.

    Fulminant Sinusitis

Fulminant Sinusitis affects patients with a deficient immune system. It can destroy the sinuses by invading the bony sinus cavities of the skull. The fungus may spread to the eye socket and cause a bulging of the eye or cause blindness.
