Inflammatory and Infectious Causes

What do Allergies result in?

Allergies can result in the swelling and blockage of the sinus cavity opening (ostium) which prevents the drainage of mucus. Allergies may also result in swelling of the sinus cavity which will cause an obstruction from within. Dairy products and refined foods are a common cause of allergies.

What are Viral Infections?

Viral Infections

The most common viruses that cause upper respiratory tract infections are Rhinovirus, Adenovirus, Influenza and Para-influenza. Viral infections cause inflammation of the sinus mucous linings which usually resolves itself within 7-14 days. Colds/Flu's, however, do cause inflammation which increases your chance of developing Sinusitis.

During a viral infection your mucus production increases as well as aggregation of leucocytes (white blood cells) in the nose. This then causes swelling of the nasal passages and obstruction of the ostium preventing proper flow of air and mucus which can result in pain.

The most common organisms isolated during a Sinus Infection are Streptococcus Pneumonia and Haemophilus Influenza. These infections usually only cause problems when the body's defenses are weakened, or due to blocked sinuses that cannot drain which results in trapped bacteria multiplying.
Fungus
Fungus

These are benign growths that projects from the lining of normal tissue. People who suffer from asthma are more likely to have Nasal Polyps. Nasal Polyps are usually caused by inflammation of the mucous lining which tends to recur even when surgically removed.

A Fungus growth is usually present in Chronic Sinusitis. Antibiotics are thought to be a substance that is very irritating to the lining of the sinuses and makes them more susceptible to bacterial infections. Due to weakened immune systems fungal infections are becoming very prevalent.

Allergic fungal sinusitis is frequently caused by Aspergillus and asthma suffers are more likely get it. Fungus balls most commonly affect the Maxillary Sinuses and are present as a typical sinus infection. The fungus ball can vary in size from smaller than a millimeter to the size of the sinus cavity which usually needs to be surgically removed.

Invasive fungal sinusitis spreads to adjacent structures and requires surgery and aggressive therapy as it can affect the visual structures and spread into the brain.
