How can Nasal Polyps be prevented?

The development of Nasal Polyps can be prevented by following these simple healthy measures:

  • Get early treatment for Allergies such as Asthma, Hayfever or a Chronic Sinus Infection (Sinusitis).
  • Manage your symptoms to reduce the chances that Nasal Polyps will develop or reoccur.
  • Oudoor Allergens

Take the medications your doctor has prescribed and avoid as much as possible, indoor and outdoor allergens and pollutants.
  • Irrigating your sinuses with salt water may help relieve mild nasal congestion and eliminate mucus.
  • Avoid OTC saline sprays that contain additives such as benzalkonium, which can actually inflame the mucous lining of your nose and exacerbate your symptoms. Instead, look for preservative-free saline sprays.
  • To make your own saline solution, mix 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 8 ounces of warm water. Pour some of the solution into your cupped hand and sniff into your nostrils. You can also inject the solution using an ear bulb or syringe. Then gently clear your nose with a tissue.
  • Medication such as steroid nasal spray may shrink Nasal Polyps and prevent them from coming back.

Doctors don't know of any one sure way to prevent Nasal Polyps. But you might be able to lower your risk of getting them if you:

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables and less fatty food
  • Don't smoke
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Exercise everyday
  • Lose weight if you're overweight
  • If aspirin is the cause, all aspirin containing medications must be avoided.

Eating more calcium and folate can also lower your risk of getting Nasal Polyps. Foods that are rich in calcium are milk, cheese and broccoli and foods that are rich in folate are chickpeas, kidney beans and spinach.

Since most Nasal Polyps are the result of Allergic Rhinitis, they can be prevented by treating this condition.

Over-the-counter nasal decongestants have an irritating effect similar to the allergy they are supposed to be treating. Continued use can cause more trouble than relief and result in an addiction to nose sprays.
