What is Pollen?

Pollen is fine powder-like material consisting of pollen grains that are produced by the anthers of seed plants or Microspore's of seed plants carried by wind or insects prior to fertilization. Pollen is omnipresent (present everywhere simultaneously) and wafts through the air we breathe. If inhaled, pollen may trigger allergic reactions such as Rhinitis, Hayfever or Sinusitis.

There are many types of pollen but the most common pollen types found in America are Grass and Tree pollen. Tree and grass pollen are the most common triggers of Sinusitis and Allergies.

Grass Pollen

Common or popular types of grass pollen which can affect your sinuses are:

  1. Sweet vernal grass is mostly found in Europe, Northern Asia, Japan, North western Africa and North America.

  2. Bermuda grass originates in India and it's mostly found in much of Europe though not Scandinavia, in Ireland, Poland, South Africa, Australia, India, USA and Japan. It is the dominant forage grass of Brazil. Blooming occurs in April/May to September/October.

  3. Cocksfoot grass it is found in North America and Europe and is found in other parts of the world, e.g. in Japan, where it is a major pollen source and in Great Britain, France and Germany. In North America it flowers from April/May to August and in Europe from June to September. It begins growing early in the spring and has strong re-growth after grazing.

  4. Meadow fescue can be found in North America and throughout most of Europe. Meadow fescue flowers in early summer and is also a common cause of most allergic infections.

  5. Rye-grass it is found in Europe and was introduced in North and South America as well as temperate Asia and Australia. Rye-grass may flower almost all summer.

  6. Timothy is one of the primary sources of animal fodder. Timothy is native and common in most of Europe, North Africa and northern Asia. It has been introduced in North and South America, South Africa and Australia.

Tree Pollen

Common or popular types of tree pollen which can affect your sinuses are:

  1. Box Elder is a short lived tree and can be up to 20 meters. It flowers in the early spring before the leaves appear.

  2. Grey Alder grows up to 20 meters. It is found in both Northern and Central Europe though not Denmark, England or North-eastern Europe and it blooms in the early spring.

  3. Silver Birch is a single-stemmed, short lived tree up to about 25 meters. It is mostly found in America, Europe, North-west Africa and Western Siberia. Silver birch flowers in mid-spring.

  4. Hazel is a short term tree with several stems, grows1-6 meters in height.
It's famous for its nuts which are harvested in the fall. The pollen develops in the late summer, over winters, matures and is released in late winter or early spring. Hazel is the earliest blooming tree causing early onset of allergic symptoms.

  5. American Beech is a tall short lived tree up to about 30 meters. American beech is mostly found in northeastern America. The beech flowers in late spring.

  6. Mountain Juniper is a large, many stemmed shrub or a small tree, up to about 6 meters. Juniper can live as long as 2 000 years. Mountain juniper is native in southwestern North America, particularly common in Texas. It flowers in winter (December and January).

These pollens are found in every state of America and people suffer from allergies during the fall season because of these tree and grass pollen.

These pollens can affect anyone whether you've got Sinusitis or not. Here are several measures you can take to minimize your exposure to pollen.

Tips to help you survive the Pollen Season.

  1. During peak pollen seasons, stay away from the offending allergens.
  2. Keep the windows closed to prevent pollen from creeping into the house.
  3. Use air conditioner to filter the air in your home or/and your car.
  4. Stay indoors as much as possible.
  5. Seal windows to stop pollen and dust infiltration.
  6. Wear a pollen mask and gloves when working outside or grooming pets.
  7. Remove clothing and wash with a wash detergent.
  8. Do not keep gardening tools or other outside clothing in the house.
  9. Wash your hair, face, arms and legs after performing outside tasks.
  10. Bath pets frequently and keep them outdoors.
  11. Remove carpet and area rugs if possible, or wash rugs in hot water every week with a wash detergent to remove pollen grains.
  12. Delegate house cleaning to others and leave the house when it is performed.
  13. If you must vacuum, wear a pollen mask to avoid airborne allergens.
