Asafoetida |
|
- Asafoetida is a resin gum obtained from both the root and stem of a wild giant fennel-like plant called the ferula.
- Asafoetida is greyish in color while still fresh, but becomes dark brown when it is dry.
- The ferula plant has a strong garlic-like smell.
Where does Asafoetida come from?
- The ferula tree grows in large natural forests and it can grow up to 12 ft high.
- The plant is commonly found in Iran, Afghanistan, Western Asia and in the north of India.
Who discovered Asafoetida?
- The Ancient Romans discovered Asafoetida in 4 BC; they were using it as a spice.
